Recipe for Success: Halo Incubator Kitchen announces new bulk storage space for food entrepreneurs.
Sherwood’s Fabulous Fudge already produces 250 pounds of fudge every week at Recipe for Success, HALO’s incubator kitchen, but with the construction of the new storage space, they will be able to increase up to 800 pounds per week.
The mission of Recipe for Success is to create a nurturing environment for food entrepreneurs to grow, develop new products, and tap into new markets by giving them access to a FDA certified commercial kitchen with low overhead costs. For three of the most successful food entrepreneurs currently using the kitchen incubator, the limited storage space wasn’t enough to fill their large orders. The new storage space will allow these businesses to expand production.
“Right now, we have to turn down customers,” said Jon Sherwood co-founder of Sherwood’s Fabulous Fudge. “But if we could get bulk storage, that would change everything. My goal is to eventually make fudge full time as well as hire three full time employees. We could easily triple our current production, and with bulk delivery and storage, our costs and labor time would go down.”
After hearing from Sherwood and two other food businesses, Recipe for Success decided to provide bulk storage space. The storage space is located at the Racine County Food Bank, which shares a building with HALO. Along with shelving space, there is also a walk-in cooler, two bulk freezers, and a corner desk and workspace area which the food entrepreneurs will share. The grand opening of this new storage space will take place in May, 2015.
“The staff at HALO and the Food Bank has been very supportive at all levels of our dream. The newly approved expansion of kitchen storage and cooler space shows the commitment of HALO to new startup businesses,” said Sherwood.
The incubator kitchen is located at HALO Inc., a homeless shelter in Racine Wisconsin, and the income generated from Recipe for Success helps pay for HALO’s programs and facilities. Businesses that work out of the kitchen often hire HALO participants as their kitchen assistants; giving them valuable training in the culinary arts, and opening new career pathways for their future.
